Soft Tissue Injury
Soft tissues of the body are muscle, fat, and other tissues that surround and support other structures
in the body. Soft tissue injuries are also referred to as "strain or sprain" or "connective tissue injury".
Injuries to the spinal and paraspinal ligaments and muscles can result from violent side-to-side
motions or excessive flexion and extension. Muscle is a highly organized tissue, and during
excessive stretch its fibers are torn and blood pools between the various structures. As the muscle
heals, scar tissue binds the structures together. This makes movement painful, and chemical irritation
causes muscle spasm. These muscle spasms then entrap the nerves and blood vessels in the
musculature resulting in pain and inflammation.
Other soft tissue injuries include injuries to the tendons and ligaments. Tendons are structures that
connect muscle to bone. Ligaments attach bone to bone. Collections of tendons and ligaments
surround almost every moveable joint in the body. When the ligaments are stretched or partially torn
they are referred to as an sprain. Tearing of the ligaments can often go undiagnosed, and may lead to
malpositioning of bones.
