Disc Herniation
Disc injuries can either be caused by an immediate tear during a traumatic event, or they can be the result of a much more gradual process. The inner disc relies on exchange of fluid, nutrients and oxygen through the
end plate of the adjacent vertebral bodies. During a traumatic event, the endplate may become injured
resulting in interference with that exchange. As a result of the inability of the disc to obtain the fluid,
nutrients, and oxygen it needs, the disc gradually begins to break down - becoming a degenerated disc,
followed by a bulging disc, and eventually to a herniated disc. The amount of time involved with the
process of the disc breakdown is related to the severity of the initial disc injury.

Several articles have focused on the affects the injuries can have as well as their classification.
The illustrations developed by MediVisuals' medical illustrators take into account the information that is
available from your client's complete radiological study (sagittal view and axial view) as opposed to only
one scan, which are then used to create an exhibit that more truly demonstrates the severity of the injury.
The images below demonstrate recommended archive exhibits on disc herniation. For custom exhibits,
which include illustrations over actual radiology films, just call for a complimentary consultation.
